near miss

we were never in danger
but for awhile
it glowed in the evening sky
taking the breath
I had saved for sunrise.
for awhile
it seemed close enough to touch
so essential
I had forgotten its rarity
until it returned
to a universe of fables
just like the words
I could never speak.
